Wow this was one of the best 3d animated movies of the year in my book. That sux it has that much ghosting. I just bought this movie and haven't picked it up yet. I'll let u know later on any ghosting issues. I got the same PS3 but with the Panasonic VT25. With cloudy with a chance of meatballs there is no ghosting noticeable. Direct TV has a few 3d channels with no ghosting. The only ghosting I've noticed is on a few of the ps3 games where two highly different contrast colors are next to each other, example black against white.
I popped in 'Despicable Me 3D' in my PS3 -- I was pretty disappointed.
I have other 3D movies and have never seen ghosting like this before ("A Christmas Carol" was gorgeous, btw). I read someone's review on Despicable Me 3D and they stated that video quality was perfect, no ghosting. This surprised me, so I was hoping to find out whether certain 3D Blu-ray discs work better with certain hardware.
My setup:
Samsung UN55C7000
Playstation 3
Samsung rechargeable glasses
Marantz SR5005 Receiver
Movies (quality):
A Christmas Carol: Very little ghosting
Despicable Me: Heavy ghosting
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: Some ghosting
Alice in Wonderland: Some ghosting
Hi sfmacintosh...I have a Samsung UN46C8000 3D tv, Samsung BD-C7900 blu-ray player, Samsung 3d glasses (not rechargeable), and Onkyo receiver. My Samsung blu-ray player has 2 HDMI outputs...one HDMI goes directly to the 3D tv and the other HDMI goes to the Onkyo receiver. I just bought Despicable Me 3D blu-ray and last night I only had about 10 minutes to try it out...I was a little disappointed but I thought it was because I had just worked a 16 hour shift and was very tired. I also read two in depth reviews that gave it fantastic reviews. Tonight, I decided to give it another try with my 20 year old daughter and we both loved it. I do think there is some ghosting especially in the first few minutes and then the transfer seem to really shine for me. In the background on a couple of shots through the movie there was slight double image but not enough to distract me. My daughter didn't mention anything negative at all, but I'm more of a perfectionist. The colors are amazing they just pop off the screen and the audio is superb!!! I think this 3D blu-ray comes in 3rd of all the ones I have seen. First...Open Season, Second...IMAX Deep Sea, and Despicable Me tides Third place with How to Train Your Dragon.
The only difference between the Samsung 7000 series HDTV'S and the 8000 series (the one I have) is that it has a higher contrast ratio and precision dimming. I'm not sure if that makes any difference with 3D or not. Also, you are using PS3 which should be great but I have never used it so I'm not sure. Make sure your TV and PS3 has the latest updated downloaded because that does make a difference for certain movies. I hope the next time you view Despicable Me it looks better :)
Ok sfmacintosh i tried Despicable Me 3D blu-ray with the PS3 and Panasonic VT25 and there is no ghosting seen. I even tried to pause the movie to try to find areas of ghosting and nothing. I've heard there has been a problem with the LED/LCD 3dtvs with increased ghosting because the refresh rate can only go up to 240hz compared to plasma 3dtv which are naturally set with a 600hz refresh rate. My Panasonic is not free from the problem either but the professional reviews i've read between the two always rate the plasma 3dtvs as having significant less crosstalk. But the only crosstalk i have noticed is from a few of the ps3 games i had mentioned before, which is few and far between. All media sources i have watched so far have been crosstalk free. If your still in your exchange window for the TV and 3d is a main concern i would look at an available plasma because excessive ghosting can ruin the whole 3D illusion of the picture. If you can't exchange your TV Ive read some tips you can try to decrease crosstalk with what you got.
-While having your 3d glasses on pause a 3d movie in a part where you see significant crosstalk and try 1).adjusting the video setting up and down on the brightness, color,& contrast and see if improves. Brightness had the most effect on crosstalk for my TV 2).Try changing distance from TV and angles of viewing to see improvement 3)Try changing lighting in room. 4). I've read the LED/LCD 3dTV need a 15-20 min warmup time with 3d content on and 3d glasses on, after warm up time there is less crosstalk. 5). Make sure you are using a high speed HDMI cable, anything over 10gb/sec is recomended for 3d. I've read reviews where slow hdmi cable speed can lead to crosstalk, although i didn't notice a difference when i used a $100 hdmi cable and a $5 cable on mine.
Hope it helps. Let me know if you get any changes.
I agree with Pete that the plasma's have less crosstalk but all the reviews I have read from blu-ray.com on 3D movies have been viewed on Panasonic Plasma 3D HDTV's including this one for Despicable me. I totally agree with this professional reviewer that there is some ghosting even on the Panasonic (which he states in his review)...but the over all transfer is fantastic and I would definitely show this off. Take a look at this review...

As a side point, at work I watch high-def on a Panasonic plasma for hours each week and I think it's a VERY good TV and I do love Panasonic but for me I want that WOW factor and the Samsung LED does that for me. I feel like everything is right there in front of me like I could just walk into the TV and I'm there...I'm talking about regular 2D TV. I definitely agree that there is less crosstalk on plasmas but certainly the 3D on my LED is amazing and everyone that comes over says the same thing.
I think it's the tv. I have the exact same model, and the beginning when the "despicable me" logo pops out is so bad it makes me wanna throw my $150 dollar glasses :/ hopefully they can fix this with a software update or something. I have read that our TVs are not the best for 3D though. Anyone love this tv anyways and as you get through the movie the 3D does get much better but I don't think I can help you or myself for that matter. BTW the panasonic plasma sets are supposed to have the best 3D picture, at least from what I read.
I know this sounds funny but turn the glasses upside down and wear them when having this problem.. IT RFALLY WORKS!! Was having the same problem but only with certain movies and also images looked to have a halo around them. Like the 3d was going in not popping out and lots of blur with movements. Frustrated one night i tried everything to fix them Desperate I put the glass on upside down so the lens would be on oppsite eyes. IT worked finsihed my movie with wonderful clear picture and awesome 3d!
Srry just seen you have rechargable glasses. This worked for me with polorized glasses.
