I understand that if I have a Samsung 3DTV that I need the Samsung 3D glasses.  But...do I also need a Samsung 3D Blu-ray player, or will I be able to watch movies in 3D with other brands, like Sony?

The brand of 3D player doesn't matter, so long as it can play 3D discs. That said, sometime there are some feature benefits by staying within the same brand, like Samsung's Anynet+ features.

With both active and passive 3D TVs out now, does it still not matter about matching brands. Or is active/passive just a matter of how the TV handles 3D and all the 3D Blue-ray players are the same?

Actually some anynet features will cross brands as my Samsung TV remote will control My PS3 that I use as my 3D Blu-ray player.

Thank you for the reply but my concern is not with the remote. The point that I am trying to clarify is whether the difference between active and passive 3D involves just the tv and the glasses or do you have to have a matching 3D Blu-ray players. Are the players active and passive or is that just a characteristic of the tv?

Well Matt answered that in the first response, any 3D Blu-ray player will play on any 3DTV, the only limiting factor involved is the glasses must be made by the TV manufatuer or designed to work with their TV's.  My setup is a Samsung 3DTV with a Sony PS3 and they work fine together.

Thanks again. I had read the reply from Matt but it was not clear from that response that the issue of active versus passive 3D was being considered. In fact, I am not sure passive 3D was even very prevalent at the time of that reply. It appears that you are saying that it does not matter whether I have an active or passive 3D tv; it should work equally well with any brand of 3D Blu-ray player. That makes things a bit easier.

Red is correct. The active versus passive only makes a difference in how the TV displays 3D images to your eyeballs. The devices, like 3D Blu-Ray players, deliver 3D signals the same way to all types of 3D displays.
