Nintendo Drops 3DS Price, Plans Freebies for Existing Owners
If you're one of the many that needed the Nintendo 3DS on the day it launched, take a deep breath. The company just announced plans to drop the 3DS price. Starting August 12, the 3DS is going from $249 to $169, which is a nice chunk of change to be saving.
"For anyone who was on the fence about buying a Nintendo 3DS, this is a huge motivation to buy now," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America. "We are giving shoppers every incentive to pick up a Nintendo 3DS, from an amazing new price to a rapid-fire succession of great games."

If you were one of the first 830,000 people to snag the handheld, don't fret. The company wants to give you a little something for the effort. No, you aren't getting a rebate. However, if you've visited the eShop in the past (and if you haven't, please do that before the price cut), Nintendo will reward you with 20 free downloadable games -- games that aren't available yet to the general public.
Don't expect to get all 20 at once; it's going to be coming in two waves. Expect 10 NES Virtual Console games to be available on September 1. That lineup will include "Super Mario Bros," "Donkey Kong Jr.," "Balloon Fight," "Ice Climber," and "The Legend of Zelda." Once they go live for all to enjoy, you will be able to download an upgrade at no additional cost.
The second round should be coming before the end of the year. Nintendo hasn't announced an exact release date yet, but says that lineup will feature 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games including "Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3," "Mario Kart: Super Circuit," "Metroid Fusion," "WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$" and "Mario vs. Donkey Kong." At this point, Nintendo says they have no plans to make these 10 games available to the 3DS playing public, so this is quite a nice score.
