Guy's Big Bite 3D Review

I will be the first to admit that I'm not one for cooking shows.  Don't get me wrong - I absolutely love to cook.  I just never seem to get the urge to watch a cooking show.  That has changed, however, now that there is a cooking show available in 3D - "Guy's Big Bite," which normally airs on The Food Network.

I have never heard of Guy Fieri, the chef that hosts Guy's Big Bite, so I had no preconceptions.  After watching his show, I can see how he has a good following and can appeal to most people interested in cooking.

Content Review

This was a fairly typical cooking show.  Guy used the half hour to prepare two dishes and a mixed drink.  I watched Guy prepare the following dishes in 3D:

  • Prosciutto and Peas Orechiette (pasta)
  • Garlic Parmesan Crab
  • Blood Orange Basil Collins (alcoholic drink)

I have to admit that the pasta looked really good to me, and I might even try it myself.

Guy is very good at explaining the dishes in a way so simple that anyone can understand.  He uses fairly common ingredients, and the dishes that he presents (at least on this particular show) were not overly complex.  I found it very easy to follow what he was doing, and I would be very comfortable trying to replicate his dishes at home. Best of all, he was humorous without being annoying, something not all TV chefs can pull off.

Being a Food Network show, it is appropriate for all ages and would appeal to anyone interested in cooking.

Use and Quality of 3D

I was skeptical how cool a cooking show would look in 3D, and my skepticism rang true.  There really was very little that made this show better in 3D.  There were a couple of instances when they showed a close up of the pan that were cool, but I was disappointed that there were only a couple of close ups. After he cooked the pasta, he said "look at the way the pasta holds the peas and everything in there", but there was no close up to see the depth of what he was talking about.  Same thing when he took out a piece of the Proscuitto.  Other than those closeups, the only 3D effect of note was the "Guy's Big Bite" graphic shown right after a break.

There was depth to the room where he cooked, but it was hardly the main focus of the show.  It looked like he was in an apartment with a bar and living room in the background (with a TV on which was a little odd). The 3D effect was only somewhat interesting when he left the kitchen to make the drink at the bar towards the end of the show.

The show was in focus with no shadows in the background throughout the show, so that was certainly positive.

Bottom Line:

I can certainly see why Guy has his own show.  He's fun to watch.  However, Guy in 3D didn't really bring out many advantages in this particular showing.  If you have no interest in cooking and are looking for cool 3D shows only, it's not worth watching.  If you like Guy and want some new ideas for your dinnertime, check it out!

I actually love his show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. So how did his hair look in 3D? :P

Well Ron I agree with you. Isn't this the minute to win it guy? 3-D is a novelty that will never really take off. Real life experiences are 3-D and tv should be a temporary source of 2-D entertainment. Watching people cook on tv is about as much fun as watching people golf on tv. Or as our boy Elvis Costello said about music critics, "writing about music is like dancing about architecture". But great article bro! Keep it up.

Sonny - Guy is the "Minute to Win It" host. I didn't realize that until after I wrote the review. Have to disagree with you about the novelty aspect of 3D TV. It WILL take off, the question is when and what technology will be dominant.

Nice review. 3D will become more appealing once the chefs learn the best way to utilize it - accenting the 3D points you brought up, add a few more to play up the 3D - thereby increasing viewership. I would love to see a 3D spoonful of yummy goodness heading towards my mouth!
