The web has been buzzing with the first official trailer for "Thor." Directed by Oscar-nominee Kenneth Branagh, "Thor" will be the next link in the Marvel movie chain.

I'm not 100 percent sold on "Thor" as a franchise, but the trailer shows a lot of possibilities for 3D effects. There's also plenty of starpower, via Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins. Chris Hemsworth ("Red Dawn") plays the title role.

Here is the film's official synopsis: "Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior, is sent down to Earth has punishment for reigniting a reckless war. But after a dangerous villain from his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth, the hammer-wielding Thor will learn what it takes to be a true hero in order to save mankind."

"Thor" will hit 3D theaters on May 6, 2011.
