Sony IFA - PS3 3D Blu-Ray Update Delayed Until October, First 3D Projector Announced

Sony went a little 3D crazy at their IFA press conference as they showed off dozens of 3D clips, musical performances, and even new 3D products to an entire audience sporting 3D glasses. For some segments, it almost seemed like Sony's single-handedly trying to convince people why 3D is the next big thing. Fortunately, they are putting their money where their mouth is.

"The 3D train is moving forward, speedily and steadily, like China's Harmony Express. And Sony clearly has the strongest engine in this 3D express." said Sir Howard Stringer, CEO.

However, that 3D train has derailed a few times for the mega electronics maker, with frequent product delays and luke-warm reception. For example, Sony's summer, and then September, bound update enabling 3D Blu-Ray playback on PS3 has been delayed until October. It's only 30 days, and with so few 3D Blu-Ray discs in the market and nearly all TV makers handing out 3D capable Blu-Ray machines with every 3D set, I doubt many will care.

On the positive front, Sony announced the VPL-VW90ES, their very first 3D projector. Inside it's powered by a 240Hz SXRD panel, and sports a contrast ratio of 150,000:1. If you were looking for an excuse to go "all Sony," the fact it uses the same active shutter glasses as their 3DTVs means you could use one pair of 3D glasses on the TV in the living room and for your projector.

Other interesting notes include a cylindrical 3D display known as the "ray modeler," which has commercial and gaming applications in mind, as well as a 3D Vaio Laptop. Sony also mentioned an upgrade to enable all current Sony Blu-Ray players to support 3D playback,  but we're still looking for details on that.

Stay tuned for more 3D stories from IFA 2010.
