Born To Be Wild 3D Review Roundup

Finally, we have a good 3D movie -- or at least someone does. Does anyone have "Born to Be Wild" playing near them?

The trailers peaked a lot of interest, and now the reviews are in. The film is currently tracking at 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. I'd say that's a success. It's no surprise, really. This is an IMAX film. They are the same people that have treated us to breathtaking, up-close 3D peeks at "Hubble," "The Ultimate Wave Tahiti," and what exactly is going on "Under the Sea."

I could go on, but I'd rather see what IMAX has in store with its latest film. This sounds like a must-see. If you have the means, take a peek and drop us a comment about the experience below.

Here is what IMAX says:

"Born to be Wild 3D is an inspired story of love, dedication and the remarkable bond between humans and animals. This film documents orphaned orangutans and elephants and the extraordinary people who rescue and raise them -- saving endangered species one life at a time. Stunningly captured in IMAX 3D, Born to be Wild 3D is a heartwarming adventure transporting moviegoers into the lush rainforests of Borneo with world-renowned primatologist Dr. Birute Galdikas, and across the rugged Kenyan savannah with celebrated elephant authority Dame Daphne Sheldrick, as they and their team rescue, rehabilitate and return these incredible animals back to the wild. Narrated by Academy-Award winner Morgan Freeman, Born to be Wild 3D is directed by David Lickley and written and produced by Drew Fellman."

Here is what reviewers say:

"At first, the 3D seems almost overbearing, and you may find yourself reaching out to push tall grass out of your face or turning your head at an angle to see around it. But it's all part of the wild experience, and when it's used in a scene like the release of an orangutan orphan back to the jungle, his wise face staring open-eyed out of his box as the camera pans up to the sunlit treetops, it's a new feeling altogether." - Laura Dattaro, Baltimore City Paper

"The attraction here is the cinematography, and it makes good use of Imax and 3-D technology, with lovely aerial views and startling close-ups. Some animal parts, it turns out, are perfectly suited to 3-D, none more so than an elephant's trunk." - Neil Genzlinger, The New York Times

"Given the sheer scale of the format, Imax provides an ideal context in which to experience 3D, allowing the eyes to wander about each periphery-filling frame and focus on whatever catches our interest, the way we do in the real world." - Peter Debruge, Variety

I watched this at our local IMAX with my 4yo daughter and we both adored it. Yes, the 3D may take a minute or so to adjust -- we were sitting all the way in the back and it looked like the screen was right in front of our faces. Actually, that's a compliment to how good the 3D is, I suppose -- just remember how frickin huge an IMAX screen is!

Of course, the cinematography was fantastic. Only complaint is that you have to keep your eyes pretty focused straight ahead -- whenever I found myself looking in corners, the 3D almost made me dizzy. But overall it was a lot of fun, and with afternoon prices was not expensive for 3D (it's not very long either, which could be good if you have young kids you want to take who can't sit thru a full-length feature film).
