Justin Bieber: Never Say Never 3D Review
Let's just get this out of the way: I am so NOT the target audience for a Justin Bieber movie. That said, I was once a teenage girl (no, really!), with hopes of being and/or marrying a rock star with what-now-seems-to-be horrible hair, and well, bad poppy music. So I get it. I get the whole Bieber vibe.
Bieber built his music empire via YouTube, giving amateur performers everywhere a glimmer of hope. This type of Cinderella story seems ripe for a made-for-TV movie. However, Bieber is apparently big enough for the big screen, hence, "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never."

"Never Say Never" follows Bieber's rise to fame, intertwined with concert footage from his 2010 My World Tour. However, instead of just making a movie, Bieber went the Jonas Brothers route and put the whole thing in 3D.
"Never Say Never" introduces everyone in the Bieber empire, as well as how that empire came to be. While the archive footage doesn't deliver a whole lot of 3D pop, it is the real meat of the movie. How this kid made it in a world dominated by Disney and Nickelodeon isn't just a miracle, but it's downright interesting.
In between that story is where you'll find the bulk of the 3D action, coming at you during the live performances. There's lots of reaching out, pointing directly at the camera, and hair flips. The edge of the stage also sticks out, to make you feel like you're in the front row (and sometimes on stage). You do feel like you are at a concert -- although some of the screaming/singing girls in the theater could actually contribute to that. (Oh, they are so scary!) There are a few other effects to make some of the off-stage antics appear more in your face, mostly surrounding Bieber's online presence.
Director John Chu (Step Up 3D) proves once again that he knows how to deliver 3D. Whether or not you want to witness the goodness will really depend on your love for technology and threshold for all things Bieber. Overall though, "Never Say Never" doesn't rely as much on the effects to make the movie. It's Bieber that's going to put butts into the seats. After all, only a Bieber fan, the parent of a Bieber fan, and maybe even the grandparent of a Bieber fan would go to see this movie. That's a real shame, though, because the story is surprisingly interesting.
