Tangled 3D Review

Disney says that they will soon get out of the fairy tale game. Oh, what a tease they have created with "Tangled." This movie is fun, funny, and incredibly sweet, making me wonder (and hope) that the House of Mouse might rethink that new direction.

"Tangled" is loosely based on the story of "Rapunzel" by the Brothers Grimm, but with a fancier name. Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore) possesses magic hair, which is used to keep her faux mother (the delicious Donna Murphy) alive, well, and looking quite foxy. As a result, Mommy Dearest keeps this lost princess captive atop an isolated tower. Of course, Rapunzel longs for the outside, especially on the eve of her 18th birthday.

Thankfully, thief Flynn Rider (perfectly voiced by "Chuck" star Zachary Levi) happens upon the tower, where Rapunzel beats him with a frying pan, and eventually her charms. While it's nice to see a Disney princess not have to solely rely on her princess-ness and sweet singing voice to get by, this is a full-on Disney fairytale -- and a good one, at that.

Aside from updating the princess model, Disney has also added a bit of 3D technology to this tale. While it does enhance a few moments in the movie, it also takes away from the otherwise gorgeous animation. There are just a few scenes that seem dimmer than they should be, as well as a few where the 3D could have been better.

Most notably, the lantern scene should have been a feast for the eyes, but comes off mostly flat. A lot of those flying lanterns don't pop all that well, but when they do, it is beautiful. Of course, that hair also yields some pretty magical powers -- 3D powers. It whips more than Indiana Jones, and provides a few fun 3D effects. The "I've Got a Dream" number is this film's "Be Our Guest," but features some of the movie's best 3D moments. Overall, the film also has good depth and a lot of texture.

It should be noted that this is Disney's 50th animated feature, and first 3D computer-animated feature. Much like this summer's  "Toy Story 3" and "Despicable Me," "Tangled" doesn't need the technology to be fun. Still, it's not a complete waste, adding a nice element to the movie. It just could have been a little better and brighter.
