The Last Airbender - Do We Have High Hopes or Serious Reservations?

The Last Airbender opens tomorrow (Thursday), which means you can beat the holiday rush to the movie theater.

The action flick is based on the cartoon, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Here is the official description: "Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Four nations tied by destiny when the Fire Nation launches a brutal war against the others. A century has passed with no hope in sight to change the path of this destruction. Caught between combat and courage, Aang (Noah Ringer) discovers he is the lone Avatar with the power to manipulate all four elements. Aang teams with Katara (Nicola Peltz), a Waterbender, and her brother, Sokka (Jackson Rathbone), to restore balance to their war -- torn world."

Hmmm... not sure about this one. First of all, it's directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Because of The Sixth Sense, which was eons ago, I always want to give this guy the benefit of the doubt. However, he's been getting a pass for that movie for too long now.

Another thing that freaks me out: The movie's marketing budget ($130 million) was almost as much as the actual movie budget ($150 million). That's nothing all that new, but frankly, what did all of that cash go to? I haven't seen a deluge of Last Airbender toys, games, or even commercials... have you?

Then, we have reviews -- or lack of them. It doesn't look like critics got an advanced screening, which is typically not a good sign. It's not horrible, but not good either.

Last, but certainly not least, this movie was given the 3D goodies after the fact. Oh the pain!

On the plus side, Dev Patel is awesome. He was awesome in Slumdog Millionaire, and I have extremely high hopes for him in this movie. Also, it's nice to know that aside from the Patel family, there is one major force behind this film: Paramount. They are already planning to make The Last Airbender into a franchise. In case you're breaking out a new scorecard, this will be the first of four films.

Oh -- and we have two insanely short clips. Take a peek and let me know if you are planning to check out the movie this weekend.
